Spanish City: Stunning by day or night, it's gorgeous. I love walking down the beach to St. Mary's Lighthouse and back for some fish and chips, anytime of the year, rain or shine.

Why is it called Spanish City?

Between 1904 and 1907 Businessman Charles Elderton first brought his ‘Toreadors’ concert party to Whitley Bay. They performed on a temporary stage in what was then the home of Rockcliffe Rugby Club, next to Whitley Park. To protect the audience from the elements, canvas and wood awnings were built and painted to look like a Spanish village, hence the name Spanish City. In 1910 Charles had Architects Cackett & Burns Dick design what we now know of as Spanish City today.
Having closed in the early 2000's it took about 10million to restore it to it's true glory.
